Waste Collection Process

As you are aware NHS England commissioned a new Clinical Waste (CW) contract from Sharpsmart which commenced on 8th May 2017.

Sharpsmart should have visited all sites at least once & collected waste appropriately.

Sharpsmart are tasked with checking compliance with current waste regulations, and ensuring a quality and cost-effective service. This may mean a review of your CW requirements from time to time.


You will be provided with the following waste containers only:

50 Litre blue lidded cardboard unit (as required)  30 Litre purple lidded unit (as required)  7 Litre yellow lidded sharps unit x 1   2.5 Litre purple lidded sharps unit x 1

The 50 Litre blue lidded cardboard units should be used for patient return non– hazardous medicines. The 30 Litre purple lidded unit should be used for patient returns cytostatic/ cytotoxic medicines. The 7 litre yellow lidded sharps bin should be used for out of date medicine with a sharps e.g. Epipens. The 2.5 Litre purple lidded sharps bins should be used for out of date sharps contaminated with cytotoxic and/or cytostatic medicines
